Honey

Madhu·मधु

Also called: honig, shahad, raw honey

The one sweet food that reduces Kapha rather than building it — light, dry and scraping, which is why it is the classical sweetener where sweetness would otherwise be a problem.

How Honey affects your doshas

In Ayurveda a food's effect depends on your constitution. This is the lens the app uses to suggest what to favour and ease off.

Effect of Honey on each dosha
DoshaSuitabilityNotes
Vata Use sparingly Can raise Vata — go easy when Vata runs high.
Pitta Neutral Broadly neutral for Pitta.
Kapha Balancing Calms Kapha — favour it when Kapha runs high.

Taste: Sweet, Astringent  ·  Potency: Heating (uṣṇa)  ·  Post-digestive: Sweet  ·  Qualities: Light, Dry, Scraping

When to go easy

The dryness can aggravate Vata in quantity.

Best time to eat it

Time of day: Morning

Combinations to avoid

Ayurveda flags some pairings (viruddha āhāra) as hard to digest together.

  • equal parts ghee by weight (viruddha ahara, Sutrasthana 26)
  • hot water
  • cooking or baking

Cautions

  • Infant Under 1

The infant caution is modern (botulism risk), not classical, and is absolute — it is a safety flag, not an Ayurvedic one.

How to prepare Honey

Never heated or cooked. Charaka is unusually emphatic here — among the strongest and most consistently transmitted food-processing prohibitions in the canon — and it is the one rule in this dataset stated as a prohibition rather than a preference. Two caveats: the reasoning is Ayurvedic (changed qualities, difficult digestion, production of ama), NOT a modern toxicological claim; and the texts give no precise temperature threshold, so familiar rules like “never above 40°C” are later interpretation rather than anything Charaka states.

In the classical texts

Honey is attested in the Charaka Saṃhitā (Sutrasthana 27) — Review batch 2: the prohibition on heating honey is confirmed classical and emphatic, and the equal-parts-ghee incompatibility is confirmed as genuine viruddha ahara (Sutrasthana 26) — unlike ghee’s yogavahi attribution, which review rejected. Virya is traditionally debated; heating is the common modern reading rather than a settled classical one..
