Chair Pose

Utkatasana·उत्कटासन·utkaṭāsana

Also called: Fierce Pose, Powerful Pose

Chair Pose (Utkatasana) demonstrated

Chair Pose is deceptively hard — 30 seconds feels like a minute, and that's exactly the point. Used as the strength bookend in vinyasa flows. For users who feel under-built, this is the pose that returns their body to them.

Benefits

  • Builds isometric strength through the quadriceps and glutes
  • Engages the core deeply to keep the spine upright under load
  • Counters the postural collapse of long sitting
  • Heat-building — useful for cold mornings or sluggish kapha-heavy days

How to practise Chair Pose

  1. Stand with feet together or hip-width apart, toes pointing forward.
  2. Inhale and reach both arms straight up overhead, biceps near the ears.
  3. Exhale and bend your knees, lowering your hips as if sitting back into a chair behind you.
  4. Press your weight into your heels — you should be able to wiggle your toes.
  5. Lean your torso forward slightly so the chest stays open.
  6. Lift your fingertips toward the ceiling. Soften the shoulders away from the ears.
  7. Hold and breathe. Inhale to lengthen, exhale to settle.

Suggested hold: 30s · Breath: Paced

How Chair Pose affects your doshas

Who should avoid or modify this pose

  • Don't practice with severe knee injury or recent meniscus tear
  • Pregnant women in late pregnancy should reduce the depth of the squat
  • Avoid with chronic shoulder injury — keep hands on hips instead of overhead
  • Skip with severe low blood pressure or recent ankle injury

If you're pregnant, injured, or managing a condition, check with a qualified teacher or clinician before practising.

Modifications

  • Hands on hips or in prayer at the heart for shoulder issues
  • Sit on the front edge of a chair if standing balance is unstable
  • Reduce the squat depth — knees half-bent counts
  • Place a block between the inner thighs to engage the legs evenly
