Bharadvaja's Twist

Bharadvajasana·भरद्वाजासन·bharadvājāsana

Also called: Sage Bharadvaja's Pose

Bharadvaja's Twist (Bharadvajasana) demonstrated

Bharadvajasana is the entry-level seated twist — easier on the hips and knees than Ardha Matsyendrasana or Marichyasana. Useful for users who find the cross-legged twists intense. The asymmetric leg position is the surprise — most users haven't twisted from this geometry before.

Benefits

  • Gentlest seated twist in the catalog — accessible to almost everyone
  • Asymmetric leg position teaches the body to find verticality despite imbalance
  • Stimulates digestion through gentle abdominal compression
  • Useful as a transition pose between deeper twists and forward folds

How to practise Bharadvaja's Twist

  1. Sit on a folded blanket with both legs extended in front of you.
  2. Bend both knees and swing the legs to the left side. Stack the legs so the right ankle rests on the left arch.
  3. Sit evenly on both sit bones — adjust the blanket as needed so the right hip can ground.
  4. Inhale and lengthen the spine.
  5. Exhale and rotate your torso to the right, away from the legs.
  6. Place the right hand on the floor behind you. Bring the left hand to the right knee or thigh.
  7. Each exhale rotates a touch deeper. Switch sides.

Suggested hold: 45s · Breath: Paced

Who should avoid or modify this pose

  • Pregnant women should practice an open variation only — don't compress the belly
  • Don't practice with herniated disc or severe lower-back injury
  • Avoid after recent abdominal, hip, or back surgery
  • Skip with severe knee injury — the leg fold is asymmetric

If you're pregnant, injured, or managing a condition, check with a qualified teacher or clinician before practising.

Modifications

  • Sit on a higher folded blanket if either hip lifts off the floor
  • Keep both hands on the floor for support if reaching the knee strains the shoulder
  • Reduce the rotation depth — half the twist is fine
  • Practice in a chair: cross one leg, twist toward the back of the chair
