Supine Spinal Twist

Supta Matsyendrasana·सुप्त मत्स्येन्द्रासन·supta matsyendrāsana

Also called: Reclined Twist, Belly Twist (informal)

Supine Spinal Twist (Supta Matsyendrasana) demonstrated

Of all the twists in the catalog, the supine version is the one to reach for at the end of a long day. Gravity does the work; the body just consents. The 60-90 second hold per side is when the parasympathetic shift actually lands.

Benefits

  • Releases the muscles around the lumbar spine and SI joint
  • Compresses and releases the abdominal organs — supports digestion
  • Activates the parasympathetic response — reliable pre-sleep pose
  • Accessible spinal rotation for users who can't sit on the floor for the upright version

How to practise Supine Spinal Twist

  1. Lie on your back on a soft surface.
  2. Hug your right knee into your chest with both hands.
  3. Extend your left leg long along the floor.
  4. Extend your right arm out to the side at shoulder height, palm up.
  5. Use your left hand to gently guide the right knee across your body to the left.
  6. Turn your head to the right if your neck allows.
  7. Rest a cushion under the moving knee if it doesn't reach the floor. Switch sides.

Suggested hold: 60s · Breath: Natural

Who should avoid or modify this pose

  • Pregnant women shouldn't practice deep closed twists — try an open variation with the bottom leg straight
  • Don't practice with a herniated disc or SI joint instability
  • Avoid after recent abdominal, back, or hip surgery
  • Skip during an active IBS flare or acute lower-back spasm

If you're pregnant, injured, or managing a condition, check with a qualified teacher or clinician before practising.

Modifications

  • Place a bolster or cushion under the moving knee so it doesn't reach for the floor
  • Keep the bottom leg bent if straightening it strains the lower back
  • Skip turning the head if the neck is sensitive — keep gaze straight up
  • For a deeper variation: cross the top leg over the bottom one before twisting
