Easy Seated Pose

Sukhasana·सुखासन·sukhāsana

Also called: Easy Pose, Comfortable Seat

Easy Seated Pose (Sukhasana) demonstrated

Sukhasana is the seat the rest of the seated practice rides on. Don't underestimate it — the hardest part of meditation, for most beginners, is finding a posture they can sustain for ten minutes without fidgeting. Get this right and pranayama, meditation, and the whole interior practice opens up.

Benefits

  • Establishes the basic meditation seat — the doorway to every breath practice
  • Gently opens the hips and ankles over time without strain
  • Trains upright postural endurance — especially valuable for desk-collapsed spines
  • Functions as the canonical pose for transitioning into stillness

How to practise Easy Seated Pose

  1. Sit on the floor. Place a folded blanket or cushion under your hips for support.
  2. Cross your shins comfortably, one in front of the other.
  3. Let your knees release toward the floor. They don't need to touch the floor.
  4. Rest your hands on your knees, palms up or down.
  5. Lengthen the spine tall — sit bones rooting down, crown of the head reaching up.
  6. Soften the shoulders, soften the jaw, soften the eyes.
  7. Periodically switch which shin is in front to balance the hips.

Suggested hold: 120s · Breath: Natural

Who should avoid or modify this pose

  • Don't practice with severe knee injury — prop or sit on a chair instead
  • Avoid with acute hip injury or recent hip surgery
  • If you have severe lower-back pain that worsens unsupported sitting, sit against a wall

If you're pregnant, injured, or managing a condition, check with a qualified teacher or clinician before practising.

Modifications

  • Sit on the front edge of a folded blanket or cushion — most users need 3-4 inches of lift
  • Place blocks or cushions under each knee if they hover far above the floor
  • Sit against a wall if the back fatigues
  • Practice in a chair with both feet flat on the floor as the easiest variant
