Half Lotus Pose

Ardha Padmasana·अर्ध पद्मासन·ardha padmāsana

Also called: Half Lotus

Half Lotus Pose (Ardha Padmasana) demonstrated

Half Lotus is where most users land — full lotus requires hip mobility most modern bodies don't have, but Sukhasana lacks the structural anchoring that makes long meditation effortless. Half lotus is the realistic seat for the deepening practitioner.

Benefits

  • Functional bridge between Sukhasana and Padmasana
  • Trains the hip rotation needed for full lotus over time
  • Stable enough for moderate-length pranayama and meditation
  • Develops awareness of the spine's tendency to twist with asymmetric leg positions

How to practise Half Lotus Pose

  1. Sit with your legs extended in front of you.
  2. Bend the right knee and place the right foot on top of the left thigh, sole facing up.
  3. Bend the left knee and tuck the left foot UNDER the right thigh.
  4. The right knee rests on the floor or a cushion. Don't force it down.
  5. Rest your hands on your knees, palms up or down.
  6. Lengthen the spine — sit bones rooting, crown reaching.
  7. Switch which leg is on top each time you practice to keep the hips balanced.

Suggested hold: 120s · Breath: Natural

Who should avoid or modify this pose

  • Skip with knee or hip injury
  • Pregnant women should use Sukhasana instead
  • Avoid with sciatica that radiates down the top leg

If you're pregnant, injured, or managing a condition, check with a qualified teacher or clinician before practising.

Modifications

  • Sit on a folded blanket to tilt the pelvis forward
  • Place a cushion under the bottom knee if it doesn't reach the floor
  • Switch top legs each time you practice
  • Use Sukhasana as a substitute when the half lotus isn't accessible
