Thunderbolt Pose

Vajrasana·वज्रासन·vajrāsana

Also called: Diamond Pose, Adamantine Pose

Thunderbolt Pose (Vajrasana) demonstrated

Vajrasana's superpower is that you can practice it after eating without feeling sick — useful as a 5-minute post-lunch reset. The kneeling shape gently compresses the abdomen in a way that supports gastric activity. Sit on a block between the heels if the ankles complain.

Benefits

  • One of the only asanas safely practiced after meals — the kneeling shape supports digestion
  • Gently stretches the ankles, knees, and quads
  • Stable base for meditation and pranayama
  • Easier alternative to cross-legged seats for users with tight hips

How to practise Thunderbolt Pose

  1. Kneel on the floor with your knees together.
  2. Bring the tops of the feet flat on the mat, big toes touching.
  3. Sit back so your hips rest on your heels. Sit bones cradle between the heels.
  4. Place a folded blanket between your calves and thighs if knees feel pinched.
  5. Rest your hands on your thighs, palms down.
  6. Lengthen the spine. Soften the shoulders.
  7. This seat is safe to practice for 5 minutes after a meal — it supports digestion.

Who should avoid or modify this pose

  • Don't practice with knee or ankle injury — the kneeling shape compresses both joints
  • Skip if you have meniscus issues or recent knee surgery
  • Avoid with severe hemorrhoids or rectal prolapse
  • Pregnant women in late pregnancy may find this uncomfortable — switch to Sukhasana

If you're pregnant, injured, or managing a condition, check with a qualified teacher or clinician before practising.

Modifications

  • Place a folded blanket between the calves and thighs to reduce knee compression
  • Sit on a yoga block or bolster placed between the heels (the most common variant for tight ankles)
  • Roll a blanket under the front of the ankles if they don't reach the floor
  • Practice for shorter durations and build up gradually
